The time we spent in between – time spent alive, sharing, learning together When Jean was ten years old she was playing with her best friend, Annie Richardson when Annie was hit by a car. This traumatic event left Jean in a withdrawn and deeply depressed state. Moreover, Jean could not control her newly awakened telepathic abilities and had to isolate herself from other people to hold on to her sanity. Jean holding Annie as she dies When Jean was eleven, a psychiatrist recommended to her parents that they consult a colleague of his, Professor Charles Xavier , who was secretly a mutant with telepathic abilities of his own. Xavier explained to Jean, but not to her parents, that she was a mutant and he treated her for several years. The Professor taught Jean how to levitate and manipulate objects through psionic force when she developed telekinesis at the age of thirteen.

Also, the “Influence” column in the table is very brief. It is only provided only to refresh one’s memory about the identity of the historical person – not to encapsulate or summarize their career.

Our liturgies for Holy Eucharist, for Baptism, for marriages and burials, for daily prayers, and for prayers and worship over almost any human experience live deep within the words of the BCP. We believe there are many ways to understand and experience the mystery of the Holy Trinity. These liturgies span thousands of years of Christian faith and human experiences of celebration, sin, grief, and joy. Many people sitting in the pews with you did not grow up in the Episcopal Church, but were drawn to the serenity and beauty of the liturgy, the love of tradition balanced with the ability to question and discern, and the inclusive welcome.
And we believe God continues to dwell in the church, guiding us.

Curmudgeonly comments documenting an unsuccessful attempt to remain in the Episcopal Church USA and the Anglican Communion at the same time with some leavening for good measure. Friday, April 22, Dating the Last Supper and Crucifixion There is far more literature about the date of Jesus’ death than there is about his birth. One reason is probably that there is so much more material in the Gospels about his last days. But another reason is also that the three synoptic Gospels disagree markedly with the Gospel of John over the chronology of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion.
In the past, scholars simply had to agree to disagree, and to choose the version which they felt agreed best with the conflicting evidence. Beginning in the last half of the last century, however, there have been a number of fresh approaches to resolving those conflicts. While a blog post is not the place for a critical review of the literature, I shall still try to give an overview of the most recent views and information.
Begin with the one fact one on which all four Gospels agree: Jesus was crucified and died on a Friday, the “day of preparation” before the Jewish sabbath. There was great concern about recovering his body and placing him in a tomb before sundown on the day he died, because of the impending Sabbath when no burials or anointing of bodies could take place. And the Gospels also all agree that it was early in the morning “on the first day of the week”, i.
So we have basic agreement on the three-day sequence of crucifixion, death and entombment on a Friday, everyone resting on the Sabbath, and discovery of the resurrection early Sunday morning. Beyond that simplified chronology, however, the conflicts and difficulties begin — starting with the Last Supper. The four Gospels also agree that the final sequence of events began with the Last Supper, followed by Jesus taking the disciples outside, to the Garden of Gethsemane, for prayer and vigil; followed by Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, and trials, first before the high priest, then the Sanhedrin, then the first examination by Pontius Pilate, then an interrogation by Herod, and ending with his sentencing by Pilate.
Ford brought a relaxed touch to the White House within days of moving in. She asked why the staff never returned a greeting and was told that President Nixon and the first lady, Pat Nixon, had preferred them to be as silent and invisible as possible. An immediate change went into effect, to the degree that during family meals the president and the butler compared golf scores.

As the social season got underway, however, Molly McElroy neither returned to Albany— nor was asked to by the President. She again received guests with him at a formal dinner two days later, and the next morning she hosted her own first afternoon reception. Standing in front of the oval divan in the Blue Room, she began to host a weekly public reception on Saturdays, largely for women who worked weekdays and would otherwise have been unable to meet her.
Any bit of information about her was eagerly sought. An initial description only provided a physical composite: Without the status of a presidential spouse, she felt unbound by the unwritten social coda that had dictated the social interactions of her predecessors who had been wives, and she freely attended social events in private homes. After two months, even the President now felt comfortable with the presence of an official White House hostess.
On the eve of her return to Albany, following the end of the series of official dinners he was expected to host as President, Arthur felt compelled to honor his popular sister at a farewell dinner on March By October 3, it was reported that Mrs. While it was clear that President Arthur still determined the roster of official White House entertaining, he would not make any final decisions until he consulted with his new First Lady.
Since Arthur did not use the bedroom in the southwest corner of the White House traditionally reserved for the Chief Executive, he turned it over to her. It took time for Molly McElroy to fully acclimate to the physical demand of standing and shaking hands on receiving lines for hours on end. At one of her Saturday receptions, she became fatigued and had to leave her post to rest.

The founding of Christianity in Britain is commonly attributed to Joseph of Arimathea , according to Anglican legend, and is commemorated in Glastonbury Abbey. A new culture emerged around the Irish Sea among the Celtic peoples with Celtic Christianity at its core. What resulted was a form of Christianity distinct from Rome in many traditions and practices. Webber writes that although “the Roman form of Christianity became the dominant influence in Britain as in all of western Europe, Anglican Christianity has continued to have a distinctive quality because of its Celtic heritage.
History of the Anglican Communion By the Elizabethan Settlement , the Protestant identity of the English and Irish churches was affirmed through parliamentary legislation which assumed allegiance and loyalty to the English Crown in all their members.
Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church St. Mark’s has a rich history dating back to October 6, , when it was incorporated as an Episcopal parish in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At that time, Grand Rapids had only inhabitants.
He didn’t preach about it from the pulpit, but he was against abortion, and he was the parish priest. There is definitely room for anti-abortion folks in the Episcopal Church. They make a big effort to be inclusive. Now, that said, that inclusivity works both ways, and you will find pro-choice priests and lay people there also. I can’t absolutely guarantee that you’ll be able to pontificate extensively about wanting abortion to be illegal at a church picnic and not have people arguing with you.
But, then again, why are you arguing about abortion at a picnic? Have a beer, grab a hamburger. One nice thing about Episcopalianism is that, with it’s roots in the Church of England and the Elizabethan Settlement, which tried to bridge the gap between Roman Catholics and more extreme forms of Protestantism, is that people don’t usually ask you to check you brain and your conscience at the door and conform to a lot of specific political positions or theological opinions.
I remember being a moderate or a progressive in a fairly conservative parish and the priest knew my views and we had some nice conversations and he had no issue with me joining, and I think the same would be true of a conservative in a more moderate or progressive parish. A local bishop once released a statement on an election and, unlike some Roman bishops who tried to dictate the way people voted Sometimes with talk of some votes being mortal sins , he instead emphasized that people were adults and not children, and that they didn’t need him to tell them how to vote.
He just encouraged them to vote and prayerfully think through issues and evaluate candidates.

The play chronicles Fales’ heartbreaking journey from being a devoted, sixth-generation Mormon and father of two to coming out as gay and being excommunicated from his church. Along the way, he also details his painful divorce, a long-fought battle with drugs and alcohol, a stint in prostitution, and finally coming out the other side as an out and proud gay dad. Intrigued by his story, I asked him to perform his play at Church of the Foothills , the progressive church I attend in the middle of conservative Orange County, Calif.
Getting to know Steven and his life story, it became clear that no one play could accurately communicate his entire life’s journey, so I wasn’t surprised to learn of his creation of two new solo plays, Missionary Position and Prodigal Dad, which complement his first. Missionary Position was based on Fales’ journals and follows his Mormon mission to Portugal, while Prodigal Dad explores the link between parent and child, and how tenuous, yet intrinsic, that bond can be.
My partner Russ and I had the pleasure of having Fales read us an early draft of Prodigal Dad in our living room, and I can’t wait to see it fully realized on stage.

In press reports the mug shot generally runs alongside another photo: On the Saturday after Christmas, the second ranking bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland was said to be drunk and texting when she steered her Subaru into the bike lane and plowed into Tom Palmero, an avid cyclist, husband, and father of two. Cook stepped on the gas and disappeared into her gated apartment community. After calling a diocesan official, Cook returned to the scene, some 20 to 40 minutes later.
And by then, Palermo was dead. A local media upstart, the Baltimore Brew , has pursued the story aggressively, outpacing in both the scope and depth of coverage the more staid Baltimore Sun. In the days since, the Bishop reportedly has returned to rehab on the shores of Chesapeake Bay, where she stayed in the days before she was booked. Cook is a suspended bishop now, and Episcopal Church officials have begun disciplinary procedures that will probably lead to her firing.
Is the Episcopal Church itself on trial, right alongside Bishop Cook? It sure seems that way.
