Besides spreading the religion of Islam, the conquerers introduced written and spoken Arabic to the regions under… The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters, all representing consonants, and is written from right to left. Twenty-two of the letters are those of the Semitic alphabet from which it descended, modified only in letter form, and the remaining six letters represent sounds not used in the languages written in the earlier alphabet. The shape of each letter depends on its position in a word—initial, medial, and final. There is a fourth form of the letter when it is written alone. The letters alif, waw, and ya standing for glottal stop , w, and y, respectively are used to represent the long vowels a, u, and i. A set of diacritical marks developed in the 8th century ce are sometimes used to represent short vowels and certain grammatical endings otherwise left unmarked. Two major types of Arabic script exist. A very handsome monumental script, it has passed out of use, except in cases in which more cursive scripts cannot be used. It originated in Mecca and Medina at an early date and exists in many complex and decorative variant forms.

Melissa 10 comments Often considered one of the more difficult languages to master thanks to the incredible amount of inconsistencies in the language, it should come as no surprise that the development of the modern English alphabet involved several languages, hundreds of years and a variety of conquers, missionaries and scholars. Origins of Alphabetic Writing Dating back nearly four thousand years, early alphabetic writing, as opposed to other early forms of writing like cuneiform which employed the use of different wedge shapes or hieroglyphics which primarily used pictographic symbols , relied on simple lines to represent spoken sounds.
Scholars attribute its origin to a little known Proto-Sinatic , Semitic form of writing developed in Egypt between and BC. Building on this ancient foundation, the first widely used alphabet was developed by the Phoenicians about seven hundred years later. The Greeks built on the Phoenician alphabet by adding vowels sometime around BC.

Since then it has had many different forms, and been adapted to write many other languages. According to Roman legend, the Cimmerian Sibyl, Carmenta, created the Latin alphabet by adapting the Greek alphabet used in the Greek colony of Cumae in southern Italy. This was introduced to Latium by Evander, her son. It was adapted from the Etruscan alphabet during the 7th century BC. The letters Y and Z were taken from the Greek alphabet to write Greek loan words. Other letters were added from time to time as the Latin alphabet was adapted for other languages.
Notes This is one version of the Ancient Latin alphabet. Many of the letters have serveral different shapes in different inscriptions and texts. Latin was original written either from right to left, left to right, or alternating between those two directions boustrophedon. By the 5th or 4th century BC it was normally written from left to right.
The letter G was later added to the alphabet to distinguish these sounds. Sample texts This is a version of the earliest known text in Latin.

The largest number of scholars favours the Latin alphabet as this template, although the Elder Futhark and even the Greek alphabet have their supporters. The Latin alphabet is the primary contender mainly because its influence at the required period 4th century is most easily established, being widely used in neighbouring Roman Britannia , while the runes in the 4th century were not very widespread even in continental Europe. In Ireland and in Wales, the language of the monumental stone inscriptions is termed Primitive Irish.
The transition to Old Irish , the language of the earliest sources in the Latin alphabet, takes place in about the 6th century. Theories of origin[ edit ] Fol.

Z What is a patron saint? Patron saints are chosen as special protectors or guardians over areas of life. These areas can include occupations, illnesses, churches, countries, causes — anything that is important to us. The earliest records show that people and churches were named after apostles and martyrs as early as the fourth century. Recently, the popes have named patron saints but patrons can be chosen by other individuals or groups as well.
Patron saints are often chosen today because an interest, talent, or event in their lives overlaps with the special area. Angels can also be named as patron saints. A patron saint can help us when we follow the example of that saint’s life and when we ask for that saint’s intercessory prayers to God. For example, Francis of Assisi loved nature and so he is patron of ecologists.

Use in the Armed Forces You may have noticed that many english letters sound similar. For most of us, this sort of error might cause a mislabeled package shipment or a misspelled dinner invitation. However, for a soldier or fighter pilot, a misheard command or radio signal can mean life or death. Therefore, radio operators in the armed services often rely on the military alphabet when sending codes or relaying important information.
This ensures clear communication, regardless of background noise or radio interference. Some popular expressions include:

December 13, ThinkStock You know the alphabet. There are quite a few letters we tossed aside as our language grew, and you probably never even knew they existed. Originally, it was an entirely different letter called thorn , which derived from the Old English runic alphabet, Futhark. Thorn, which was pronounced exactly like the “th” in its name, is actually still around today in Icelandic. Yogh Yogh stood for a sort of throaty noise that was common in Middle English words that sounded like the “ch” in “Bach” or Scottish “loch.
When the throaty sound turned into “f” in Modern English, the “gh”s were left behind.

We do not intend to become one. We are still trying to do things other people think are crazy but we are super excited about. But in the technology industry, where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant. Try actually looking at the comment in question. It was not commas that were left out, or anything else that changes meaning. Implying someone is illiterate because they chose not to bother with apostrophes where they are unnecessary, is like implying someone is poor because they chose not to buy something. But there is no evidence of illiteracy there or here- only evidence of a person not using punctuation.
The grammar is on point, spelling is on point, and general coherence is obvious. If he wants to make an intuitive, astute comment about the underlying psychology behind my comment, I would have little to argue there probably. But what he did say, is just juvenile and inept, tbh. In addition to that, you can find quite a few publications talking about the death of the apostrophe, and how its being slowly removed from our language.
Apostrophes werent even used commonly until the s or on, and plenty agree they are superfluous. Craig Piercy I generally write the 6th letter of the alphabet as an f.

So I started looking for outside-the-box date night ideas to mix in with our regular date nights and this was the result! Simply make a date night theme centered around a letter of the alphabet. You could make food that starts with the letter B, recipes that start with the letter B, go to a restaurant that starts with the letter B, go see a movie that starts with the letter B, do an activity that starts with the letter B, and the list goes on.
This is a great date night theme idea with endless possibilities that can work for anyone. Whether you are husband and wife, daddy and daughter, sisters, or friends, alphabetical dates are super-fun, super-personal, super-personalizable connecting times between you and whoever you are wanting to spend time with. They make wonderful memories, and some of my favorite date nights with my hubby have been alphabetical date nights.
